The SUP Coalition is a community-focused coalition comprised of individuals
that reside or work in Sherburne County and are committed to reducing
youth substance use through community collaboration.
April is Alcohol Awareness month and with prom and graduation season approaching, the SUP coalition and its supporting partners wanted to remind parents and caregivers of the important role they play in ensuring the safety of our young people.

Parents and caregivers with prom-aged children received this letter along with a Social Host Ordinance fact sheet to help combat underage alcohol use. Alcohol remains the most widely abused substance among our youth.

SAMMn's mission is to educate the citizens of Minnesota on the research and science of marijuana usage with the scientific understanding of marijuana’s harms and potential as medicine.

Review the fact sheet as it is important that we provide accurate facts to support healthy decision-making about any drug use.

Early Intervention Parent Focus Groups:
What Was Learned?
Have you ever wondered what struggles other parents or caregivers of teens encounter when dealing with drugs and alcohol today?

With vaping on the rise, the legalization of marijuana spreading across the country, and the influence of social media, conversations must evolve.
Parents across the country participated in focus groups to share how they deal with new challenges facing their families.

Here are a few of the highlights:
  • "Parents lamented that their children are exposed to more information — not all of it good — more frequently, and they find it difficult to be “gatekeepers.”
  • "All of the parents we spoke with take teen substance use seriously. However, they recognize that it’s likely that their kids will be exposed to drugs or alcohol and possibly engage in substance use."
  • "Many parents were surprised to learn that 90 percent of people with addictions started in their teen years — sometimes even earlier."

MDH: Updated School E-cigarette Toolkit

The toolkit provides tools and resources for MN school staff, including administrators, educators, teachers and health services staff, who are working to address the use of e-cigarettes and other vaping products in schools.

It outlines opportunities for action that can be taken by various school staff, along with resources and tools to help.
Access the toolkit here.

Additional
Guide for School Staff available here. The resources included in this guide are available free from the federal government and can help educators protect students and schools from the impact of illicit substance use and abuse.

Q: What excites you about the SUP Coalition and its work?

A: The thing that excites me the most about the SUP Coalition is the actual impact it has on our community. You can see a difference in some of the students at our school and how it has changed their lives!
Q: How & why would you encourage other people in the community to support the efforts of the SUP Coalition?

A: I would encourage young people to join the Coalition for a couple of different reasons. The first reason being it's a lot of fun and it's a great way to meet new people! The second reason is because you are creating a change in people's lives for the better, and that's one of the best feelings in the world.

Q: What do you do in your spare time? Provide a fun fact about yourself.

A: In my spare time I love to hunt and fish. I also enjoy listening to some relaxing music and hanging out with my friends. I would also like to consider myself a cornhole expert!

A fun fact about me is that I have been in gymnastics for 7 years and I made an appearance in the state meet twice!
